John Cronin In Conversation with Dr Róisín Kennedy

On Tuesday, 1 September, 6.30 - 7.30pm John Cronin will be In Conversation with Dr Róisín Kennedy as part of Green On Red Gallery's Dublin by Dusk 2026 events.   The gallery is delighted to host this walk and talk through Fictional Fiction on foot of Dr. Kennedy's recently published " Scar Tissue " response to Cronin's new paintings in The Irish Arts Review ( Autumn, p. 58-59 ).

She says :  "  While a concern with mechanisation has been a key stimulus throughout Cronin's 30 year career... The work subtly plays on technology in its flat " screen-like " surface and acidic colour palette, which seem to evoke electronic or tech-generated imagery.  On closer inspection the tactile paint surface contradicts any machine image, providing a richly layered plane made of overlapping and competing elements that both vie with and obscure each other.  The paintings provide a history of their own making. .... "  

We are delighted to welcome Dr Roisin Kennedy for her first event at the gallery. Roisin Kennedy is a historian of Irish art and a graduate of UCD and the University of Edinburgh, where she completed an IRCHSS-funded PhD on critical writing on art in Ireland. She has held curatorial positions including Yeats Curator at the National Gallery of Ireland and Arts Council Bursary Curator at Dublin Castle, and has published widely, including her monograph Art and the Nation State (Liverpool University Press, 2021). Her research interests include the critical reception of modern art in Ireland, art writing after 1880, censorship, and the position of women as artists and subjects in modern art.

Green On Red Gallery is very proud to announce Fictional Fictions, a solo exhibition of John Cronin's new oil paintings which continue the grapple with AI, truth and fiction.   

He says :

        " These are my Alt Genre Paintings, mechanical, gestural and  organic celebrations and abuses of paint.  Morphing, pathologising, and destructive elements seek out and illuminate what has gone before.
         
         Elements break down, both compositionally and in their very materiality – once-luscious oil paint is cracked, dried and exhausted and vies with free-flowing organic rivers and mists of paint, at the same time revealing the scar-tissue which is the underpainting. These paintings are chaotic and confusing reflecting our technological age of non-linear warfare and algorithms.  They are echo chambers of narratives drifting farther from the truth, a truth that has not been forgotten, just outvoted.   FICTIONAL FICTION.   "

John Cronin is one of Ireland’s leading and most established painters. He has been exhibiting in Ireland and internationally since the late 1980s.   

His ZXX ( 2016 ) paintings were as much a metaphor for the hidden, untranslatable layers of his often monumental abstract oil on aluminium paintings as they were a comment on our new open-source world.   ZXX was the title of his large solo RHA exhibition in 2016.  His Standard Deviation ( 2013 ) 122 x 549cm triptych was featured in the RHA's In And Of Itself - Abstraction in the Age of Images ( 2022 ) survey exhibition of Irish abstraction, curated by Patrick Murphy.   
 

While his work’s primary concern is abstract painting in the age of artificial intelligence, the titles of his exhibitions often reflect a desire to add a thematic twist to each new body of work. Through a diverse range of exhibitions, including Standard Deviation, Augmented Reality,  MHz,  ZXX up to Artificial Bee Colony in 2024, we have seen him continually extend the language of his practice.

Cronin has gleaned praise from many quarters most notably from the eminent New York Art Critic Donald Kuspit, who says Cronin ‘ puts the “juice” back into modernist painting, after Greenberg’s post-painterly theory squeezed it out. ’

is the title of Green On Red Gallery's summer 2023 exhibition featuring new and recent work by gallery and invited artists in multiple media. The exhibition opens on Thursday, 13 July and runs to the end of August. While the title suggests the medium of drawing - the root and beginning of many artists' practices - it also can have nothing to with works on paper or even work that is hand-wrought. The viewer is invited to ' work it out ' to arrive at a clear grasp of the painting, photograph, drawing or installation in front of them. Typically in Drawing it Out the viewing is amplified and extended in a multitude of ways.
